President Trump Reports India to Halt Russian Oil Purchases

President Trump enacted an additional 25% tariff on top of the 25% already in place over the oil imports.

President Donald Trump announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has committed to stopping the import of Russian oil. In August, President Trump enacted a 25 percent tariff in addition to the 25 percent duties that were imposed on imports from India due to the purchase of oil from Russia, which essentially supports that nation’s war against Ukraine.

“We have a great relationship,” President Trump said about Prime Minister Modi, but added, “We’re not happy with him buying oil from Russia.”

“He’s assured me there will be no oil purchased from Russia,” President Trump said. “He can’t do it immedIately. There is a little bit of the process. … All we want from President Putin is to stop killing.”

Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Shri Randhir Jaiswal stated, “Ensuring stable energy prices and secured supplies have been the twin goals of our energy policy. This includes broad-basing our energy sourcing and diversifying as appropriate to meet market conditions.” He added that discussions continue regarding energy cooperation between India and the United States.

President Trump said that India would go back to buying oil from Russia once the war ends. He is urging the European Union and China to halt the purchase of Russian oil as well.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For President Trump to be prudent in his negotiations and announcements of international discussions and relations.
  • For wisdom for the president and secretary of state as they seek leverage to end the war in Ukraine.
